It depends greatly upon the trust and maturity level around the table. I’ve had some wonderful experiences working with the DM and other players to role-play how my character reacts to misinterpreting a situation. While I, the player, knows that the NPC is lying through their teeth. If my character does very poorly, he might trust that NPC, and that helps drive the narrative forward.
